This year, Start Making a Reader Today (SMART) celebrates 25 years of providing reading support and books to Oregon children. That’s a milestone worth celebrating! Since 1992, SMART has connected more than 118,000 community volunteers with over 188,000 students across Oregon for one-on-one reading support, and given children 2.4 million books to take home and keep. The book, Oregon Reads Aloud is a compilation of 25 read-aloud stories written and illustrated by Oregon authors and illustrators. Both the campaign and book aim to bring attention to the importance of reading engagement and motivation in a child’s literacy development, and to SMART’s work inspiring lifelong readers and learners. We’re lucky to be joined by contributors Heidi Schutz and Gina Ochsner, among others.
This event is free and open to all.
